Over the past few days we have found some excellent snow (even though it has not snowed for a number of days) and today it just got better. We used the lift system of Les Contamines to gain height before using the touring kit to gain 250 metres more altitude and the Col de la Gittaz. Just before the Col we took off the skins and began our 1200 metre vertical descent. We enjoyed untracked powder skiing for 750 metres of this before some nice tree skiing and finally a piste to gain Belleville. This is one of the big advantages of visiting less well known resorts; good powder days after a snowfall. Following some lunch we had a nice afternoon cruising the pistes. Of note; at lower elevations and on certain aspects at altitude, there is a significant amount of large surface hoar crystals which is worth remembering if it snows soon.
