Friday 2nd January

Another short day required today, so Phil and I headed up to Cam Chreag on Meall nan Tarmachan and climbed Beldame Buttress. The turf was frozen solid, the rock rimed and there’d been a light dusting of fresh snow giving probably the ideal conditions for this route.

The Grade I gullies, Fan & Easy, were complete with very solid neve; Mackay’s and Clark’s gullies were broken, but probably climbable on a mixture of neve, ice and frozen turf at maybe a grade harder than normal. Walking out there were some pretty obvious sections of ice visible forming on Creag an Lochain.

The inversion wasn’t present in the morning (rain in Edinburgh and no frost in Callander) and things were thawing slightly down at valley level. It was below freezing above the car park all day with a light southerly breeze, the crag was in cloud for most of the morning, but clearing occasionally by lunch time.
